If you are thinking about setting up a franchise network you would be well advised to implement proper training programmes for franchisees, says John Davidson, founder of Gas-Elec.
Mr Davidson founded Gas-Elec in 1996 when he realised no other company offered a combined gas and electrical safety inspection for residential lettings. A year later he decided to expand the business by franchising and the company now has 18 regional franchises, 115 inspection franchises and a £10m turnover.
During the past 12 years, Davidson has added additional services to the company, such as gas boiler servicing and energy performance certification.
With employees providing such a wide range of services, it is important for Gas-Elec to ensure all employees have the right skills set, as Davidson explains: 'One of the most important parts of a franchise is proper training for franchisees. We have built a new training centre, largely to support the franchise network but we also offer training courses to the outside world.'
